JS: From my point of view, I’m not sure there is anything in common besides the term “coach.” The word “coach” implies someone who stands next to the athletes and helps them with their technical performance (and maybe mental preparation, too). On my website, I list five successful lifters I admire; they are all very different coaches who have helped each individual lifter achieve success. Some coaches try to treat everyone like they are genetically biased (for example, they ignore overtraining) while others make every single athlete the same (they set weight off very low for all lifters). Some coaches believe fitness is vital at all times; for others it fluctuates during the year due to seasonal training variations and other factors such as injuries or dieting goals. It seems these days everyone wants a coach to treat their athletes one way – but no single coach should be making those decisions on behalf of their clientele! My recommendation is that each person needs a moldable plan at first before quickly forming a tight bond with their coach from whom he/she learns from day by day. Coaches need not be perfect since perfection isn’t possible anyways, but good coaching will help your progress as long as it doesn’t lead you down a path that negatively affects your health or sanity!
