In case you’re not familiar with these trail running shoes, know that they have a completely different design from every other trail runner we tested. While most road runners have a flat sole with a thin tread for maximal traction on pavement, the sole of a trail runner is typically higher around the ankle for climbing muscle support and tensioned so there’s no gaping hole in between your foot and shoe during bone-jarring impacts. The heel also has less cushy padding than does traditional trail runners. Trail-running shoes are more specialized but they will be more bone-crushingly hard on an ankle or knee if run incorrectly. In contrast to flip flops or minimalist shoes, trail runners offer little leeway while running off-road because it’s easy to misjudge how much force is going into your shoe when hitting rocks instead of simply coasting over them. That said, it can be very rewarding—especially if your hiking boots don’t fit well or you loathe carrying multiple pairs of socks and sneakers every day when only really needing one pair—to go light with perfectly fitting footwear that locks down on just about any terrain you want to explore outside city
