CrossFit, the popular fitness program known for its tough workouts, is opening its doors to girls. Female participants will hammer out four CrossFit Open Workouts this summer, the second stage of the nine-stage competition that tests contestants on functional movement skills and fitness tests. The first phase featured “Eagles” who attempted 200 pull-ups within 24 minutes; the second phase tested them against three rounds of two-person rope climbs. Judges selected one male and female entrant each round for an All Out effort in which they completed 22 minutes of CFEs (constant front load exercises), or 45 rounds of thrusters—sit up rows with bodyweight progressively added—as quickly as possible without dropping their barbells or rings. Open: Tomorrow’s a new CrossFit day! 9am CrossFit Open 14-15s = 60 wall ball shots, 15 chest to bar pull ups, 21 imm. push ups 18 minute WOD (+2 min rest) Warm Up: Mobility drill and thorough stretching of major locomotive muscles. Maintaining good posture wherever possible before starting the workout. Start with 200 meters total movement across all major joints. Cycling through each joint at least 2-3 times, then repeat through all joints for 10 cycles per set (jury riggers). Coaches should move participants in and out of splits for proper feet placement and stretching of entire body prior to and after the workout. Some athletes may require extra time to warm up any muscle groups/joints specific to their sport or physical alignment weaknesses, so they will need to check in with their coaches ahead of time about how much time they may need for mobility needs such as hip flexion or ankle dorsiflexion (upward facing dog). A rule of thumb is that ones you feel like your doing anything more than leg swings when warming up; it’s probably not warmed up properly yet! [ YouTube Link ] [ Video & Routine by @alexmckee
