If you have been doing Crossfit for a while and have built up your Crossfit muscles, you may be wondering if the only way to continue building size is by trying new variations on lifts. Or, do you just need to build another huge set of traps? You’ve probably already heard about the “50% rule.” Anecdotally, I’m sure it’s true – most lifters who claim to have big delts will say they use a 50% incline bench press. But what does this mean? The 50% Rule (use it at your own risk) basically states that the best height for your bench press should be somewhere between 1/2 and 2 times your height. So if I’m 5’8″, my bench press should ideally be above 195 pounds for males or between 105-120 pounds for females. When I was first starting out in the gym, I used to bench 315 pounds (190kg). Then after years of failure with lockouts, I dropped 185 pounds (84kg) down to 225 pounds (102kg)…still haven’t managed over 195 pounds yet! And even then, I don’t know that 3/4 inch plates would help push me past 200 pounds anyway so maybe not worth it…I’ll stick with 145+lbs until further notice!
